I. Review of Bilateral Political Relations

1, the two countries have established Sino-Lithuanian Economic and Trade Cooperation Committee. The committee, which has remained in good operation, has so far held six conferences.

II. Political relations and important mutual exchanges (1998-1999)

On February 9, 2002, Chinese President Jiang Zemin sent Lithuanian President Vakdas Adamkus a telegram congratulating on Lithuanian National Day.

On September 28, 2002, at the invitation of the Archives Bureau of Lithuania, deputy director of the State Archives Bureau of China Yang Dongquan visited Lithuania, and held talks with Director of the Lithuanian Archives Bureau Grelayitis.

On September 30, 2002, Lithuanian President Vakdas Adamkus sent a message to Chinese President Jiang Zemin congratulating on Chinese National Day.

III. Economic and technological cooperation and trade ties

According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs of China, the trade volume between China and Lithuania in 2002 reached US$110 million, up 73.8 percent from that of the previous year. Of the total, China's export was US98.23 million, and import US$11.81 million, up 66.8 percent and 166.2 percent respectively compared with that of the previous year.

From February 26 to March 2, 2003, the sixth meeting of the Sino-Lithuanian Joint Economic and Trade Committee was held in Vilnius, Capital of Lithuania. Chairman of the Committee on the Chinese side and deputy director of the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Zhang Di made an address and held talks with Shenwtasi, Director of the Department of Economy of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two sides held discussions about bilateral financial cooperation such as anti-laundering, prevention of tax evasions, and etc. State Secretary of Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Yigratawechis, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy Msihkinis, and leaders from the Ministry of Transportation and Communication met with the Chinese delegation respectively.

IV. Friendly exchanges and cultural communication

On May 12, 2002, Director of International Department of the People's Daily Guo Yongyi led a journalist team to Lithuania and interviewed Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus and Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis on Sino-Lithuanian relations.

From July 11 to 13 ,2002, at the invitation of Minister of Culture of Lithuania Dowedeni, Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of Guangdong Provincial Congress Cheng Zhiqing led a cultural delegation to visit Lithuania.
